You know my heart; Have you ever been puzzled by someone's behavior? You scratch your head and think, I wonder why he did that? Well, God knows everything, not just what we do but our innermost thoughts. He knows why we do what we do. He knows what we think and feel. If the thought that God knows you that well scares you, then something is wrong. You see, because God knows us so well, He knows when we are deceived. He knows when we have misjudged the actions or words of others. He knows their hearts and ours. And He can help us understand each other. I can't tell you the number of times I have been confused by the actions of people, even my best friends and close family members. But when I go to the Lord in prayer and in His Word, He helps me to understand just what is going on. All too often our natural tendency is to jump to conclusions about other people that are, well, less than flattering. We think they don't care or are inconsiderate. But many times they are overwhelmed by what is happening in their own lives. When someone says harsh words to you, is your first thought, I wonder what's happened in his or her life lately? Or is it, How dare she treat me that way after all I've done for her! God knows when our hearts are deceived by thoughts about others that are untrue. And God, who loves us, does not want us deceived at all. If you give Him a chance, He can guide you in every relationship and circumstance of life. David wrote a psalm about yielding to the searching of the Holy Spirit. Psalm 139 says: "O LORD, You have searched me and known me. David begins by acknowledging that God knows everything, both what David does and what he thinks. But David doesn't stop there; He invites the Holy Spirit to guide him: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Phil Joel sings a song about the great comfort we can get from letting God, who knows us so well, be our guide and protector. The song is called "I Adore You." Listen to his song; read Psalm 139 and then think about how much God loves you. Let Him guide your words and actions, especially as they relate to the other people in your life. And as you experience His compassion for them, I pray that you will learn to rest open-hearted in the presence of God and can sing with Phil: And I adore You. --Suzy C.
